What a gorgeous suprise to have this hot weather thrust upon us. My girlfriend has been off work enjoying the sun and dragged me down the beach everyday last week.. I can’t believe it’s April! I hate to say it but bring on global warming.

Anyway I was suprised to see some really easy money to be made, but no one doing it.

On Swansea beach there were no hawkers trying to sell ice cream or cans of pop..To me its a no brainer buy an extra large box of chocolate Magnums and cans of Coke, pop them in an icebox, and head to the beach.. There’s a mark up of about 70 pence at item. And in my lunch hour, on a sunny day, I could easily sell 30 items, that be enough for a cheap night out, or a curry for two at the Gulsham curry house round the corner.

Having scripted web devlopment languages for 8 years now, I have had some good programming times, some great programming times and some scary programming times. I thought I’d share some of my “dating and relationships” experiences in scripting each of these “babes”.

PERL
She was the first to arrive at the party, and is still there (probably). She is brainy and she knows it. Tricky to get a handle on but rewarding, certainly back then I was admired by everyone for dating her. She lives in the Regex neighbourhood, which is very complicated, but once you know it well its great for shortcuts to anywhere.

Ultimately though she didn’t really fit in with my family and friends, and pretty much wanted to live on the Server. Though she has kept in touch and keeps popping back, our time together has passed.

ASP
As the highschool cheerleader and homecoming queen, ASP ALWAYS got the boys! I see pictures of her today and she still has that perfect smile, and to die for body.

Though I remember how beneath that smile when she crashed boy, things got pretty ugly. Despite the appearance of her usual and extra functions, in private she had one hell of a temper.

I think I prefer her younger cousin C#. She looks a hottie! If I was single I’d definately make a move on her: probably a traditional date like TGI’s then a movie. That’ll impress the all new American girl.

COLDFUSION
I met Coldfusion via a colleague at a First Tuesday event in the dotcom heydays. She was oozing sexuality and flirted with all the men in the room. Everyone wanted to use her services.

I only dated Coldfusion on one project. And she had all these inbuilt functions that seemed really easy to use, but I don’t know, we just didn’t click maybe it was proprietory thing?

Anyway, I think she married some rich banker, whos company then got bought out by a bigger company. And they now are retiring young in some swiss village in their new Adobe. Good luck to her.

PHP
I love’d you back then when you were the girl next door, and still do today. At first I didn’t understand when you were broken, you’d throw up all non-sensical error messages. But then the way that you fit comfortably into a page, and the way that I can write entire applications in one sitting, makes you so comfortable, natural, and my perfect partner.

Over the years I’ve seen you grow with better OOP & XML, really, our relationship just grows from strength to strength. When I started to dream my thoughts through you was when I realised, PHP, I love you.

AJAX

At that Techno gig we danced all night you with your micro-pvc skirt and crazy hair. We had fun amongst the widgets, mini-scripts, and GUI helper apps. You talked at 100 miles an hour, and seemed to throw exceptions with more vigour than anyone else.

You are far to hectic for me though!

…Ajax now dates my junior (but more gifted) programmer, they get along fine they talk the same language, and I am happy for them both. Honest.

.

.

JSP

During university JSP was the always doing big things, like setting up the college radio station and meeting up with IBM & Sun and loads of things.

Loads of people got you wrong and thought you were just for scrolling news applets. Idiots!

I really liked you, I liked the way you wern’t phased by hype, and just got on with your solid plans for the future, but I don’t think our plans were the same. You were fixed on getting business with banks and industry, I preferred the whole website industry instead. You are a real lady now, and really successful.

RUBY

You looked so tempting, flitting your way accross the room in the coolest club in town.. Everybody was saying “Who is she?” when they saw your young red full lips, your Model-view-controller methods and easy-build effortless gaze.

We dated twice, and we snogged, though I thought your snog was like something out the movies, or it felt like you were just copying scenes that you’d seen in the movies. Are you a future Stepford wife?

Am sure our paths’ll cross again in the near future, we shall see!

..

——————————

Author Paolo Di Terlizzi is the developer of www.spendamillion.com a website where you get a virtual £1 million to spend.

Skiving can be fun! This website seems to have a big appeal with people that are skiving at work, not just in the UK but all around the world. People want to spend a virtual million on our site and kill some of that boredom factor. Office skiving is fun too, remember kids. We get a lot of emails like this:

Hi. Just wanted to say thanks for your website. I was really f**king bored at work. I had a ton of paper repositioning to do, staplers to refill and watercoolers that needed vodka added them.. When I came accross your website… Just want to say thanks for filling 22 minutes of my day with my own sun drenched, happy-days-to-come skiving. Am sure that one day I will get out of this sh**hole and get that daydream house abroad and pet tiger… But for now its back to tormenting my colleagues, until the next skive… (Clare XXXX, Rotherham)

Although this email from Clare is quite humourous, there really seems to be an element of truth in it: Spendamillion.com seems to be addressing her need to escape the working environment, daydream of the future, whilst remaining physically within workplace.

This in-office skiving is an example of the ability to daydream and escape to your own private world. Speaking to my psychologist friend Tony Allan he suggest that it might even be essential for our sanity:

“Daydreaming in the office can be a personal control mechanism and not necessarily a bad thing, it allows the individual to regain control of their thought space, reassert themselves and their identity to their internal dialogue and image”

Wikipedia, even suggest that daydreaming is healthy: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Daydream Though too much of it can be bad! Is it daydreaming the same as skiving? when does a daydream become a skive?
So is spendamillion.com the first of a new set of web tools that allow us to play out and “practice” our daydreams? Or is any excuse to skive what we are after?
Go on, start skiving, daydream and have fun.

>> Play spendamillion.com for free here, and blow a million for fun

I came accross www.bagborroworsteal.com and thought what a genius idea. Basically they are a company that rents out the latest Chloe, Chanel, Prada handbags and jewellery for a monthly fee. This means that rather than buy one expensive bag for £500, a hip metropolitan girl can spend £500 a year and get a new bag every month.

Wish I’d thought of that one!

They’ve taken it to the next level now and renting out jewellery and accessories. Also the girls that are renting out these handbags are high spenders. Which means this company has plenty of opportunities to flog them other stuff.

We have now 291 items for you to choose from to get your ultimate fantastic dream wishlist. There is definately something for everyone: the obivous, the expensive, and the crazy!

The recently added Gorgeous Tiffany collection is proving popular amongst the girls, as well as the As Seen on Screen (ASOS) £10k spend, finished off with the Chloe Handbag.

(swim in chocolate)

In the car section we’ve added the amazing new Audi R8. Yummm… And a VW camper van for the travellers out there!

The Aston Martin Vanquish is still the most popular wheels that you’d buy. Followed by the Yamaha R1 Motorbike. zoooooom.

If you want to sort your life out, in the life changes section you can now hire a PA, get fit with a personal trainer, get a life coach, and adopt a 3rd world child, just like Madonna. Or if someone gets a bit too much trouble you can hire a ahem “problem solver“.

No £1m wishlist though would be complete, without a few kooky items, so once you’ve climbed Everest (£24k), and swam in a chocolate swimming pool (£2k), why not get a pot-bellied pig? Buy a million penny sweets? Or hire a c-list celeb for the day to do your washing up, amuse your parents, and dance like a monkey for your friends?

Watched on ITV a new show where 5 millionaires giveaway chunks of a million pounds to members of the public in front of a studio audience… Fortune! The Million pound giveaway! It was a bit like Dragons Den, except you could pitch to do a tour-around-america-of-a-lifetime, or pitch for a holiday home for kids with cancer..

It was pretty good tv to be honest, better than x-factor. The little kid who had cancer, got tears in my eye (and Duncan Bannatyne, one of the judges). A trampy woman came in and asked for money to buy a plasma tv and £1200 sofa, and got laughed out the studio! haha.. Good tele I guess.

Anyway the show features: Jeffrey Archer (politician/author), Duncan Bannatyne (health clubs), Jaqueline Gold (of Ann Summers), Simon Jordan (mobile phone entrpreneur), And Kanya King (founder of the Mobo awards)… And it’s on Tuesdays at 8pm on UK iTV.

P.s… My website had 10,000 visitors in past 2 weeks, which is nice.

When Gordon Ramsay goes around fixing failing restaurants in TV’s “Ramsay’s kitchen nightmares”, there are some themes that keep popping up again and again, that you’ll need to follow if you want that successful restaurant… A website is a lot like a restaurant, customers come and go, if you don’t deliver something quality of good value they’ll f*ck off.

So here are some top Ramsay tips, interpreted for website owners & builders:

Use locally sourced, seasonal ingredients.

Got a restaurant near the sea? Then why the f*ck isn’t Mackerel on the Menu? Got a website in the fashion sector then why haven’t you got any industry pundit blogs, community forums, or key fashion news?

Your website should extend into its’ habitat, touching those people, places, issues and events that make up your websites audience’s world. These are the true ingredients of your site, not the programming language its written in.

Simple not overly complex food.

If you look at the successes of flickr, youtube, basecamp, they all are have strong key functions, and often don’t do more than you expect, nor have complicated GUI. Keep it simple. Just like my www.spendamillion.com site. People like it when your site has obvious simple uses.

Swear a lot at your team

I tried this on Andy my colleague in a web firm in Bath, England. “For f*cks sake Andy, your CSS is referring to the a non-existent image that’s why it’s not appearing”

“F*ck off you c*nt, at least my last website didn’t have a table in it. Cock”.

I think I’ll leave that one to Gordon, then. I guess the lesson is to be honest with your colleagues, else you’ll all hide behind facades, and the true website vision and wont shine through, and you’ll be unhappy.

Customers, customers, customers

You can have a 3 star Michelin chef, but if the bums aren’t on seats, you’ll be burning several grand a week. Go out ask your target customers what they want out of a website like yours. Go to forums, ask your friends, ask their friends, ask strangers on buses. Start working to what they want, and surely enough, people will come to your website.

Hey, building up a mailing list, an intelligent Adwords campaign and smart SEO always helps too.

Smarten the place up a bit

Out with the dated décor, or stuffy environments, clean white walls, inviting exterior and smiling service staff will make your restaurant run smoothly. Same with your website: cut all that junk on your homepage, have speedy online customer service, and shiny crisp photos and text. You’ll make a website that is an enjoyable, sticky, repeat-vistable experience.

PR Stunts work, use them

Every week Ramsay does a “campaign for real gravy”, “invite of the local dignitaries” or “drag in the local z-list celebs”, and it fills the restaurant gets the desired PR and voila, kick starts the business.

What are you afraid of with PR and your website? Come up with big ideas, and go pester them newspapers and local radio stations and big clients. You never know you may even put PR as a central tenet of your business, and it may even work, and you’ll have lost nothing.

Good luck with your website.. Paolo Di Terlizzi

—-

IF you are looking for single trip travel insurance then you will be covered on holiday.

We’ve added the Nintendo Wii to spendamillion after many many many fine spendamillion visitors suggested it.

This is the most talked about console since the first Playstation, and it is truly fantastic. Where as Playstation and Xbox new versions have gone all hi-tech graphics engines, blah, blah, blah, Nintendo has kept it simple focusing on usability, and it really works. They gotta success on their handies.

When I first got a Nintendo Gameboy, it was so exciting. Everybody had them and everyone carried them with them wherever they went along with their lunchbox. When I see my childhood friends now (those that had gameboys as kids), 90% of them work in IT and the internet. They are surrounded by laptops and mobile phones, and it seems natural, it doesn’t seem strange to them, to have all these computers orbiting them in their day jobs.

If Gameboy naturalised our generation to accept laptops, mobiles and pda’s as part of daily life, what technologies are being naturalised for the next generation?

Back to the Wii… Anyone, who has played a Wii will love the way the Wii:

Involves more physical actions from the users. It’s not just pressing buttons. You have to move your whole arm and the joypad to get a desired action (like stab a baddy, or hit a tennis ball).

It’s also more about social games, rather than solely playing shoot-em ups against yourself. Look at Wii Tennis!

You could ask what kind of naturalising effect will these two elements have on our kids for their adult life?

Am pretty sure that at the least our kids will feel more comfortable physically engaging in viritual environments, and engaging physically with remote others in virtual environments.

Hang on a minute though, there aren’t any jobs out there, that require you to physically engage in cyberspace are there? Nor is the typical Windows/SchmOffice PC particularly physical, it’s just tap at a keyboard and twiddle your mouse, isn’t it, no big arm gestures, no jumping up and down?

Today, am not going to predict the future, but l guarantee you that there WILL be the workspace that allows phyiscal engagement with information, and with this, our jobs will be more phyiscal.. but physical communicating via machines… And it will all seem natural. And its all down to the Wii..
